In the materials science laboratory, the properties and behavior of various materials under different stresses are analyzed.

Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences supports you in various types of material testing for the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of materials and in the assessment of damage cases.

For this purpose, equipment for hardness testing (Brinell, Vickers, and Rockwell), impact testing, and tensile testing can be used, supplemented by imaging microscopy. The university provides advice on appropriate application options for specific tasks.

The aim of these testing methods is also to determine the behavior and material properties of standardized material samples or finished components under mechanical, thermal, or chemical stress. Typical applications include testing the hardness of gear surfaces or verifying the fracture behavior of material samples.

Mechanical material testing Material properties such as tensile strength, impact bending energy and hardness values are determined using the following measuring devices:

  • Tensile testing machine MFL up to 100 kN (modernized with Zwick control)

  • Instron tensile testing machine up to 30 kN

  • Notched bar impact hammer 300J (MFL) with digital data acquisition modernized (contactor and light)

  • Hardness tests according to: Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers (INNOVATEST Falcon 500), Shore A and D (for plastics), mobile hardness test according to Leeb

Material analysis Both reflected light microscopes and non-imaging methods are available for analysis:

  • Zeiss stereo microscope (1000x)

  • Leica digital incident light microscope DMS1000 (34-565x) with LasX measurement software

  • Roughness tester Mahr MaPS10 surf

  • Ultrasonic testing device (Karl Deutsch - Echograph 1095)

  • Chemical material composition analysis using spark spectrometer (Hitachi - Foundry Master Smart)
