Helmholtz-Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (HZI)ENDURIVAC is bringing together two technologies to develop next generation vaccines.
The main challenge we are working on is waning immunity. Most vaccines require multiple boosters for immunity upkeep and only provide temporary protection. We develop a novel vector platform to provide durable single-shot protection. This vector is based on the murine cytomegalovirus, a murine herpesvirus, which is safe in humans, establishes an antigen depot that continuously trains the immune system and has a huge potential for multivalent vaccines.
We do not only develop the carrier platform, we also engineer antigens to be safer and more effective. Antigens can interact with host factors, such as receptors, which can mask the antigen or lead to undesired side-effects. We have developed a technology that systematically removes undesired binding to receptors while keeping epitopes for potent neutralizing antibodies intact.
These technologies can be combined or produce standalone assets. In our strategic lead programme we develop a vaccine against RSV that is superior to the currently licensed vaccines.
