Virtual Lab - Cryomoicroscopy

The Virtual Lab Cryomicroscopy is a virtual learning environment for training in cryomicroscopy. It is based on videos and 3D scans of a realistic laboratory and allows users to virtually learn how to operate and use a cryomicroscope. It teaches, among other things, the individual work steps from sample preparation to ice formation. The application supports location-independent, interactive, and practice-oriented learning and allows access to realistic laboratory conditions even without direct access to a physical laboratory.

Details

Training in cryo-microscopy requires access to suitable laboratories and appropriate technical equipment. This can limit practical learning opportunities for students and aspiring researchers, especially when there is no physical access to a cryo-microscope or laboratory. Furthermore, learning complex workflows based purely on theoretical content is only limitedly practical. The project addresses this challenge by transferring real laboratory conditions into a virtual environment.

The Virtual Lab Cryomicroscopy virtually maps a real laboratory using videos and 3D scans. This allows users to explore a realistic cryomicroscopy laboratory and virtually understand the relevant workflows. The application maps the process from sample preparation to ice formation and enables interactive, practice-oriented learning. A Meta Quest 3 with controllers and software on a laptop are used as the technical basis.

The essential added value of the application lies in location-independent and more flexible access to cryomicroscopy training. Students can learn realistic laboratory processes without being immediately dependent on a physical laboratory. This creates additional and more accessible training opportunities for aspiring researchers. The application thus offers a way, especially for university teaching and cryomicroscopy training, to supplement theoretical knowledge with an immersive and practice-oriented learning experience.
