Description
Welcome to the coating laboratory at Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences! Functional coatings are used to impart additional properties to the substrate material. Depending on the substrate material and the desired function, different raw materials and coating techniques are used. These, in turn, give the substrate material the properties required for the application, such as hydrophobicity, electrical conductivity, electromagnetic shielding, water vapor permeability, or even a suitable microporosity for specific filtration applications. For the production of functional coatings, Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences has, among other things, a semi-automatic film drawing machine (MTV CX4) and a roll-to-roll coating system (Sumet FBCU 9/350) for roll widths of up to 350 mm. With the help of these devices and the associated tools, substrate materials can be coated, impregnated, or functionalized. A test rig for pressure-driven membrane processes (including microfiltration) is available for verifying the quality of microporous layers. Furthermore, the laboratory is equipped with instruments for determining water and air permeability, pH value, conductivity, pore size, and pore distribution (TOPAS PSM 165 porosimeter). Gas permeability, water vapor permeability, and the electrical conductivity of coatings can also be determined. Various imaging techniques are available for visual inspection. In this context, Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences has continuously offered and conducted projects, for example, on the production and characterization of electrically conductive coatings, polymer-based microfiltration membranes, asymmetric enthalpy exchange membranes, and the electrocatalytic purification of water. The following equipment is available in the coating laboratory, among other things: • Film drawing machine (MTV CX4) • One roll-to-roll coating system (Sumet FBCU9, 350 mm) • Two porosimeters (POROZIT N, TOPAS PSM 165) • Test bench for determining the performance data of air-to-air heat exchangers and enthalpy exchangers • Test bench for determining the performance data of fuel cells and electrolysis membrane electrode assemblies.
