Narrowed blood vessels, as in atherosclerosis, can trigger serious cardiovascular diseases. Replacement vessels can help, for example as a stent or bypass. However, especially in older patients, their own veins are not available in sufficient quality as replacements. Synthetic implants are usually complicated by permanent anticoagulation and infections. The Leibniz University of Hanover is therefore developing bioartificial vascular prostheses to sustainably improve treatment.
