Smartphone-based emission mapping of agricultural work processes

Challenge

In agriculture, the CO₂ footprint is gaining importance as an indicator of ecological risks within ESG assessments. Banks must consider these risks when granting loans. However, many farms have limited knowledge of their emission sources. Existing methods do not allow precise allocation to individual processes. Automated recording is heavily dependent on ISOBUS-compatible technology. Non-ISOBUS-compatible machines and devices, as well as missing or unreadable machine bus systems, lead to high technical effort, additional costs, and complex post-processing. FMIS are only sparsely used so far, making timely and locally differentiated emission recording difficult.

Solution approach

The “TrackTor” project is developing a low-cost, low-threshold, and widely applicable system for emissions measurement. The focus is on using smartphones as mobile sensor platforms with integrated sensors such as GNSS and inertial measurement units. By combining movement data with a priori knowledge, tables, and public data sources such as weather data, agricultural work processes are to be automatically recognized. The saving of specialized measuring technology is compensated for by intelligent software, data science methods, and AI-based pattern recognition. The goal is the automated assignment of emission quantities and costs to work processes. The solution is compatible with simple and older machines, requires hardly any additional hardware, and is designed to be practical to promote acceptance and data quality.
