Good battery technology alone is not enough: Start-ups and SMEs also need access to research infrastructures and market knowledge to get to market.

On September 16, 2026, the right partners will meet for the free workshop "Technology up close: Research meets entrepreneurial spirit" in Dresden:

In the TraWeBa research project, we bring together start-ups and SMEs with experts from research and industry.

Together, we want to find out: What research infrastructure is actually needed? What hurdles make access difficult? And what market information helps to develop a competitive product from a technological idea?

Insights from practice will be provided by Dr. Stefan Wolf from the Competence Network Lithium-Ion Batteries KLiB e. V., Dr. Maximilian Mellin from EAS Batteries GmbH and Dr. Michael Roscher from Sixonia.

In pitches and discussion rounds, participants share their concrete experiences, needs, and solution approaches. A tour of the Fraunhofer IKTS battery labs shows what research and development opportunities are already available.

"Battery Knowledge in a Nutshell" offers an introduction to the world of modern LI batteries. In 90 minutes, you will receive an overview of the structure and function of batteries, the essential manufacturing processes, typical fields of application – from electromobility to stationary energy storage – as well as current trends and future developments. The seminar is aimed at anyone who wants to get started with the topic of batteries – regardless of technical prior knowledge.

The maakwi network evening on September 16, 2026, on the maakwi Campus in Heek is dedicated to the question of how sustainability can become a key factor for economic success in the SME sector. The focus is on transferring scientific findings into marketable industrial solutions. Fraunhofer UMSICHT will first show the role of research institutions in sustainable innovations, the cooperation opportunities companies have, and which topics are currently relevant. Afterwards, Fraunhofer UMSICHT and Matthews Engineering will report on a practical project, how cooperation between research and SMEs works, what challenges arise, and which factors promote successful innovation transfer. Three start-up pitches will complement the program with new approaches to sustainable energy supply, intelligent sensor technology, and digital solutions for resource efficiency. In addition to technical impulses, the event offers space for exchange, new contacts, and discussions with companies, researchers, and start-ups. It begins at 3:30 PM, with the official conclusion at 6:05 PM; afterwards, the evening will conclude with food & drinks and networking.

Sustainability in the SME sector – Innovations for a successful transformation

How can companies convert scientific findings into marketable solutions? At the maakwi networking evening, Fraunhofer UMSICHT, Matthews Engineering and innovative start-ups provide practical insights into successful innovation projects.

The meeting point: ErfOLgsstarter is a networking and information format for founders and those interested in founding a business. The focus is on practical reports from entrepreneurs who provide insights into their path to self-employment or company succession. The presentations are supplemented by opportunities for exchange and networking with other interested parties and players in the regional startup scene. The format offers a low-threshold platform for inspiration, knowledge transfer, and networking on the topics of founding a business and company succession.

Using the telephone in a confident and customer-oriented manner is a real challenge. In the age of social media and a changing communication culture, newcomers need orientation and training to ensure they can also perform well on the phone. After all, first impressions are crucial, can create a positive relationship, and thus lay the foundation for good business. This telephone training demonstrates what business partners expect when communicating on the telephone and how to handle even difficult situations with the necessary calm and confidence. Contents: • Basics of telephone communication • The first impression – politeness and good manners • Influence of voice, language and body language • The inner attitude towards the conversation partner • The “common thread” in the conversation, including preparation and follow-up • Small talk • Teamwork: How do you handle important information? • Self-discipline and motivation • Ability to accept criticism and complaint management • Difficult situations • These and other questions are answered with practical tips

Together with the startup accelerator SmartCityHouse, the IT Award will be presented for the fifth time on September 17 as part of the 7th German IT Security Congress.

The winning team will receive €5,000 in prize money, exhibition space at #DITSK27 (worth €5,000), and direct access to the SmartCityHouse network.

Particularly attractive this year: The first three startups to apply will each secure two places at the exclusive partner and speaker dinner on the evening before.
